- 1 large onion
- Oil for frying

Prepare the Beef Patties:Season the beef patties generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Cook the Beef Patties:Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat.Cook the beef patties for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on top of each patty and allow it to melt. Prepare the Onion "Bun":Peel and slice the onion into thick rings.Carefully separate the rings, keeping them intact as much as possible. Wrap the Beef Patties:Take two onion rings and place one on top of each beef patty, wrapping the patty with the onion rings. If the onion rings are too small, you can use toothpicks to secure them in place. Fry the Onion-Wrapped Patties:Heat oil in a deep fryer or a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).Carefully place the onion-wrapped patties into the hot oil and fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the onion is golden brown and crispy.Remove the patties from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Assemble the Flying Dutchman:Optionally, prepare any additional toppings you'd like to add such as lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, or Thousand Island dressing.Place a lettuce leaf (if using) on a serving plate, followed by one of the onion-wrapped beef patties.Add any desired additional toppings.Top with the second onion-wrapped beef patty. Serve:Serve the Copycat Onion Wrapped Flying Dutchman immediately while hot.
